Located near the Erie Canal, Akron became a major manufacturing city known as the “Rubber City”. With the city of Canton sitting right next door, many times the two cities are referred to as a pair. Akron's population is on the decline, along with many other Ohio cities, and currently sits at about two hundred and ten thousand. More diverse than many other cities in the US, Akron has large populations of English, German, Irish, African American, and Italian peoples.
Akron Health Problems
Akron has one of the lowest uninsured rates in the nation. With just seven percent of the Akron population uninsured, Ohio’s health insurance companies are able to spend their time and resources working on some of the other issues affecting the area. Because of problems like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease affecting so much of the community, programs like Get Fit Akron have been put together to provide helpful resources for community members. Allergies are also a big problem in the city and have become a serious issue among people that have left them untreated. Although, Akron is one of the only large Ohio cities not listed in the top one hundred worst cities to live in with allergies or asthma.
