Recent Ohio Healthcare Initiatives

SCHIP in Ohio

Through SCHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program), Ohio provides health insurance coverage to the uninsured children of working families. Offered through the Ohio Department of Jobs and Families, the program offers affordable healthcare to all children. Recent legislation has broadened the earned income levels of the working poor so that more children are eligible through this program. To be eligible, the child must be under the age of 19.

Ohio Medicare

The Ohio Department of Insurance has recently begun a program of hosting Medicare check-up days. This program allows seniors to consult with State insurance employees concerning their Medicare coverage and their need for any additional coverage, such as Medicare Part D Prescription Coverage. Seniors are able to get objective advice about this sometimes confusing area of health coverage.

Ohio Patient Protection Act

The Ohio Patient Protection Act allows Ohio patients to appeal health insurance claim denials to an independent board called the Independent Review organization (IRO). This program has helped the state's insured recover nearly $2.4 million in previously denied claims in 2006 alone. IRO decisions are binding on the provider, but the individual consumer may still pursue the matter with a lawsuit if ruled against. This act also protects consumers who have been denied further coverage because of a claim.
